St John the Evangelist Palmers Green is offering its inaugural Organ Scholarship from September 2017-18. The Scholar will work closely with the Director of Music developing their church musicianship skills including accompanying and directing the choir, organ improvisation, liturgical awareness and the interpretation of sacred music. We are a friendly and supportive liberal Anglican parish church in the heart of Palmers Green. We have a fine three-manual 1904 Abbott & Smith Organ in a striking Edwardian Gothic Revival church designed by John Oldrid Scott. Our congregation and choir are hugely supportive of musicians.

Requirements: The Scholar will need to demonstrate keyboard and sight-reading competency to at least a Grade 5 standard preferably in organ, though competent pianists with some organ experience will be considered. The Scholar will need to attend Sunday morning services and Thursday night rehearsals with the choir and children’s choir. Our Scholarship will be tailored to the skills of the Scholar, with scope to develop special areas of interest in addition to the standard skills of a church organist. Those who wish to go on to be Directors of Music, composers of sacred work or choral conductors are strongly encouraged to apply, though every application will be carefully considered.

Renumeration: The successful applicant will be awarded an annual honorarium of £500 paid in monthly installments. There are additional opportunities for paid work through weddings and funerals both at St John’s and at London churches connected to the Director of Music. Deputising at St John’s when the Director is absent will also be paid. Further, the Director is offering to give the Scholar fortnightly organ lessons pro bono should the successful applicant not already have a teacher with whom they would prefer to study.

There is no upper age limit for the Scholarship: enthusiasm and passion for musical learning will be given priority. Due to the close relationship between music and faith at St John’s it is expected that the Scholar be a practising Christian.

To apply please submit a CV outlining relevant experience along with a covering letter to the Director of Music Robert Hainault by email to If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch by email.
